Review- Freedom Planet (Wii U)

I love classic Sega games, I need to just say that. Their absence on the Wii U Virtual console is greatly missed. But in their absence we have something else, something potentially even greater than the classic Sega games. We have Freedom Planet.

Visuals

Freedom Planet is visually reminiscent of the Genesis Sonic The Hedgehog games and will quickly remind players of that series. The beautiful sprite animation and visual effects are great and make the game shine. The game looks amazing on my TV screen and really captures the feeling of a 16 bit game on an HD TV. The framerate was consistent and there was no screen tearing so those are pluses compared to certain other games out on the Wii U eshop now. The game just flows beautifully and takes you back to a time when you were a kid, playing genesis games and having fun.

Sound

Freedom Planet has some amazing music and sound effects. The music is exciting and gets you pumped for the adventure of a lifetime while the sound effects are perfectly synced to the game. The voice acting is extremely well done and honestly didn’t feel cheesy at all. it felt natural which is hard to do with that type of game. The soundtrack never gets irritating and I believe it will hold up extremely well as the years go by.

Gameplay

I’m just going to come right out and say it. Freedom Planet is the best Sonic game, Sega never made. This is what Sonic The Hedgehog 4 should have been but was not, much to many fans’ frustration. The game is fast paced but not too fast and utilizes combat well. The game is more than just a Sonic homage however, as it is a love letter to so many classic Genesis games. The controls are spot on, the story is interesting, but if you don’t like it then you can play without story, and above all else it is extremely fun. The entire time I played this game, I had a smile on my face from ear to ear.
