Best Nintendo console launch ever

“Tell me something I don’t know” seems to be a familiar saying now when it comes to Nintendo Switch sales. Originally touted by Nintendo themselves as the best selling Nintendo console debut ever over its first weekend, the NPD has seconded that thought once it was finished calculating the sales for the month of March.

The Nintendo Switch just enjoyed the best selling console debut month in the history of Nintendo consoles, says NPD.

The NPD continues:

The Game Boy Advance system sold 870,000 copies in its launch month, putting the numbers for the Nintendo Switch at roughly 901,000 consoles sold in its launch month.

Overall, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild was the #2 best selling game, with 900,000 physical copies sold for Nintendo Switch and 400,000 copies sold on the Wii U. It should be noted that the NPD only tracks physical copies for the Zelda game and no digital copies have been factored in.

Another surprising detail from the list is that both 1-2-Switch and Super Bomberman R were among the twenty best-selling games on the month, at 13 and 17 respectively. 1-2-Switch had a 19% attach rate to the Switch, and Super Bomberman R is believed to have just surpassed the 100,000 copies sold. Again, neither of these two games have their digital sales tracked.

As far as Super Bomberman R, NeoGAF user Celine provided us with a list and pointed out that it is the third best-selling Bomberman title since Bomberman 64 here in the U.S.:

  • Bomberman 64 (N64): 420K
  • Bomberman Hero (N64): 225K
  • Bomberman Generations (GC): 113K (Probably not final LTD)
  • Bomberman Party (PS1): 56K
  • Bomberman World (PS1): 45K
  • Bomberman 2 (N64): 35K
  • Bomberman Online (DC): 18K

This explains why Konami seems to be very happy with the sales and has been doing updates consistently to improve performance and add additional things to the game.
