After months of speculation and arguing about Nintendo ports and if they were a real alternative to booster the catalogue of the Nintendo Switch, that question has been answered.
Business Wire reports that sales expectations for launch day have exceeded any and all from games’ past:
For the skeptics, this is surprising because the Switch was believed to have almost non-existent relevant software, with the next major title after Breath of the Wild being a port of a Wii U game, which would negate any type of sales boost since people already owned or had played the game.
But it was easily forgotten that Mario Kart on Wii sold 37 million copies and the only reason its Wii U counterpart didn’t sell well enough was because only a fraction of the people who purchased the Wii bought into the Wii U.
Mario Kart 8 Deluxe now joins The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and the Nintendo Switch itself as the fastest selling products in their respective family. Is it too early to say that Switch has turned the fortunes of Nintendo and spearheaded a change in how the company performs and is viewed as a whole?
