Kyrie Irving and the conundrum of the NBA 2K18 cover

Did that just happen?

If you aren’t yet aware of the trade that took place last night in the National Basketball Association, Kyrie Irving is no longer a member of the Cleveland Cavaliers. After news leaked of a meeting he held with the Cavs’ front office following their loss to the Golden State Warriors, and that in it he had requested to be traded, it became a forgone conclusion that at some point he would be gone.

Initially, Kyrie Irving told the Cavs of four teams he would like to be traded to: San Antonio Spurs, Minnesota Timberwolves, Miami Heat, and New York Knicks. But because Irving didn’t have a ‘no-trade’ clause, the Cavs could essentially ship him off to any other team they desired.

Enter the Boston Celtics.

Perhaps Irving hadn’t listed the Celtics because he didn’t like their franchise or because he thought better than to ask the Cavaliers to make a deal with their Eastern Conference Finals’ rivals, but out of all the possible trade scenarios that everyone predicted, Boston was very low on the list.

So at the end of the day, the deal that was made had the Cavaliers sending Kyrie Irving to the Boston Celtics for Isaiah Thomas, Jae Crowder, Ante Zizic, and Brooklyn’s 2018 first-round pick. Brooklyn’s pick could very well end up as high as the 1st pick in 2018’s NBA Draft.

How does this affect the NBA 2K18 game?

Kyrie Irving is the cover athlete of this years’ NBA 2K game, sporting his Cleveland Cavaliers’ jersey.

Not only that. Kyrie Irving was also shown in-game wearing the new Goodyear Cavaliers’ jerseys for the 2017-2018 season.

If you were wondering how head scratching this trade has been, look no further than NBA 2K’s own Twitter account reaction as soon as the trade was completed:

With a trade like this taking place, the covers from NBA 2K18 will need to be replaced in some way, but with the game less than a month away from release, it is possible that most of the covers have already been printed, with packages of the game sealed and stored in warehouses ready to be shipped.

How will NBA 2K address this issue? We are still unsure, but it seems like they at least have started making in-game changes, announcing Isaiah Thomas as an official Cleeland Cavaliers member:

As far as the physical copies go, they could make an alternate cover with Kyrie Irving wearing his new Boston Celtics jersey available online for download, so that those that want to can print the cover and change it (as most Boston fans will likely want to do). Another way would be to print additional covers and provide them to retailers and given to the customers alongside their new copy of the game.

A third option would be doing a mass recall of all the copies to print the correct covers, but we can safely assume that this won’t be an option, as it would cost too much and potentially hurt the possibility of the game being available at its announced release date.

Then again, leaving the cover as it is could serve as a reminder that anything can happen at any time in the NBA.
