And the Golden Mario goes to…

ShigeruNews Best of 2017 Awards

Shigeru News is proud to present their nominees for ‘Best of’ in various categories specifically for games that came out on the Nintendo Switch this year. Any game that came out on or after December 1st, 2017 (like Xenoblade Chronicles 2) did not qualify for this years’ awards.

The selection for both nominees and winner came down to the writers on our website collectively voting for their favorite games, and selecting them based on the total of votes each one received. We decided to keep our nominees between five and six selections. Here are Shigeru News’ Best of 2017 Awards.

Best Visuals:

Best Visuals Winner

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – WINNER
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle
  • Splatoon 2
  • Mario Kart 8 Deluxe

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild has a very unique art style. It’s realistic with a bit of a cartoonish style mixed in, and it works wonderfully. Everything looks like they belong in this world, while still being easy to tell what it is. I often found myself running to the top of a mountain or to the edge of a cliff just for the scenery or a sunset.

It’s rare for a game to do that to me, so this truly shows how beautiful Breath of the Wild is and wouldn’t surprise us if the art style of this game is still being celebrated many years from now along the same lines as games like The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. (TendoGamer)

Best Music:

Best Music Winner

  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – WINNER
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle
  • Splatoon 2
  • RiME
  • Metroid: Samus Returns

From the valley to the mountaintops, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is never short on fitting, nostalgic, and monumental music that accentuates the feeling of discovery as well as tightly convey a sense of urgency as the Red Moon rises. As John Williams catapulted the Star Wars experience with his score, both Manaka Kataoka and Yasuaki Iwata are able to perfectly compliment Eiji Aonuma’s vision of the game. (Sergio Acevedo)

Best Story:

Best Story Winner

  • L.A. Noire
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – WINNER
  • Disgaea 5: Complete
  • Batman: The Telltale Series
  • Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle
  • Ever Oasis

While many games on the Switch this year had some great stories, no game could top The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Although it may not have the best story in the entire series, it did enough to make us fall in love with the characters and the fate of the world. The game focuses on telling the story from the perspective of Link and Zelda 100 years prior to the game, and while it sometimes doesn’t work perfectly, we’ve never seen Link and Zelda interacting as much as they do in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Best ‘Indie’ Game:

Best Indie Game Winner

  • Stardew Valley – WINNER
  • SteamWorld DIG 2
  • Mr. Shifty
  • Golf Story
  • RiME
  • Chicken Wiggle

Stardew Valley is an amazing game. It understands the simplicity in farming games and goes to the basics of the genre. It’s a very much appreciated return to older games like Harvest Moon, with amazing visuals and high replay value that constantly kept me coming back for more. Stardew Valley is proof that indie games are here to stay and that game companies don’t need exuberant investments into a project for it to succeed. (Jmac)

Best ‘Previously Released’ Game:

Best 'Older' Game Winner

  • Mario Kart 8: Deluxe – WINNER
  • Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim
  • Rayman Legends: Definitive Edition
  • Rocket League
  • Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove
  • L.A. Noire

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe expands on what the Wii U variant did to such an outstanding level. The new additions of the Inkling boy/girl are spectacular additions to the franchise, and having such an expansive entry of Mario Kart on the go and at home led us to the conclusion that Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is The Best Previously Released Game. (Ali)

Game of the Year:

Game of the Year Winner

  • Splatoon 2
  • Super Mario Odyssey
  • The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild – WINNER
  • Mario Kart 8: Deluxe
  • Mario & Rabbids Kingdom Battle

It was a close contest between The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Odyssey but Breath of the Wild edged it out. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is an amazing game and it really took us by surprise. It’s the best open world game I’ve played, and its world is beautiful with diverse and unique locations. The weapons system worked perfectly and it’s realistic physics all make this Hyrule a place I’ll never forget.

There may not be much to the story unless you find the elusive memories,  but every bit of the story was amazing. The dungeons are original and a blast. The game feels very much like Zelda and you tell it has a bit of inspiration from every Zelda game released up to then. When you’re all done you still have a massive task ahead of you: explore every nook and cranny of Hyrule and find all of the cool secrets! This is one adventure I’ll never forget!
