It is official. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild is the Game Awards Game of the Year for 2017.
Breath of the Wild was announced winnee of this award less than an hour before the writing of the article. Not only that, but it is the first time Nintendo has won the award during the four years of the Game Awards.
“I’m really happy I ended up making games,” game director Hidemaro Fujibayashi said. “On behalf of all the staff who worked on the game, let me once again say thank you so much.”
Aonuma and Fujibayashi, ecstatic, each found themselves speechless, seeing the project they had poured their very souls into over the past half-decade obtain such an honor.
Breath of the Wild competed against Horizon: Zero Dawn, Player Unknown’s Battlegrounda, Persona V, and Super Mario Odyssey. It may have been a close one, especially with Odyssey, but the game pulled through, carrying a portfolio of prestigious reviews and awards throughout the year.
Breath of the Wild also won the awards for Best Direction and Best Action Adventure Game.
The Champion’s Ballad DLC is available now.
